Rental Housing Code

As of March 17th, 2022, any person and/or entity that maintains or operates rental housing unit(s) within the City of Starkville must register with the Community Development Department by May 15th, 2022. A registration fee of $15 per rental housing unit shall be due upon registration. This does not apply to hotels, motels, short-term rental, and/or any bed and breakfast.

If the Community Development Department or Code Enforcement determines that the property has been rented without registration after the effective date of the passage of this ordinance it shall be considered a violation and enforced in accordance with Section 3.19 of the Unified Development Code. In addition to penalties as outlined in Section 3.19.2 of the Unified Development Code, revocation of the certificate of occupancy for each unregistered unit may occur.

Application for an initial rental housing license shall be filed with, and issued by, the Community Development Department. The applicant shall be the property owner, agent, or manager and shall have the authority to provide consent for inspections.

How to Submit your Application

There are currently three options provided for submitting you rental housing application.

  1. U.S. Postal Service
  2. In person at Starkville City Hall, second floor.
  3. By emailing the completed application to permits@cityofstarkville.org
